Croatian cellists Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser truly rock out with only two cellos on their debut, self-titled album. The two masterfully cover famous rock and pop tracks, reworking them on their cellos to give them a fresh, classical sound. Standout tracks: 1, 2, 4, 8, 11, 12. No FCCs (no lyrics at all) **1) Where the Streets Have No Name (4:05): U2 cover. Starts slowly and then rocks out at 0:56. **2) Misirlou (Theme from Pulp Fiction) (2:15): Cover of the Dick Dale track. Solid choice for this album, really highlights the fast speed at which the two can play the instrument. 3) Use Somebody (3:29): Kings of Leon cover. Mid-tempo. The bridge starting at 2:11 is particularly notable. **4) Smooth Criminal (4:12): Michael Jackson Cover. Fast tempo. 5) Fragile (3:29): Sting Cover. Slow. 6) The Resistance (3:50): Muse cover, fast tempo. Translates the urgency of the original very well. 7) Hurt (4:30): Nine Inch Nails cover. Slow tempo. **8) Welcome to the Jungle (3:12): Guns N Roses Cover. The introduction is a highlight of this album. 9) Human Nature (2:49): Michael Jackson Cover. Slow tempo. 10) Viva La Vida (3:42): Coldplay Cover. Kind of too obvious a choice for the album, but strongly delivered nonetheless **11) Smells Like Teen Spirit (2:42): Nirvana Cover. True highlight—would never have envisioned this song on strings, and convinces me that it can be done. **12) With or Without You (4:51): Cover of the classic U2 track. Majestic sound, the cello mirrors the tone of Bono’s original vocals very well. |
