CLAUDIO SCOLARI: Colors of Red Island

MODERN FUSION – Here’s some unusual stuff out of Italy: Scolari and Daniele Cavalca, both drummer/multi-instrumentalists, alone or with Scolari’s son Simone on trumpet. The music is rhythmically based of course, but with an icy, surreal air coming from vibraphone, stark synths and Scolari’s rather distant melodies (think Tangerine Dream). This won’t work for everyone, but I find it strangely compelling.

1. 7:14 – with piano: cool, dreamy sing-song melody sways on bouncy rhythm
2. 7:57 – drums/vibes/synth: chilly feel, obscure melody with driving beats
3. 8:04 – trumpet & good drums shrug off cold wind, churn through aloof synth
4. 8:56 – just drums: rises slowly from silence, like an exotic ritual procession
5. 4:47 – swaggering walk: trumpet & synths roam over a striding beat
6. 8:21 – jazzy, upbeat stroll: vibes/drums/bass… very repetitive but still cool
7. 8:40 – drums/piano… introspective start with waves, becomes unstructured
8. 7:04 – just drums: tumbling all over a tense tick-tock pulse
9. 5:30 – spooky noir with vibes, switches to an uptempo circular groove
10. 6:28 – tribal: drums & flute move quietly, speeds up in the middle
11. 5:47 – cool echoing jazz with vibes, sounds like something from a movie
