JEFF LEDERER: Sunwatcher
Jazzheads, 2011
POSTBOP – Oh man, this is excellent! It’s the kind of jazz disc one rarely hears these days, full of real passion. Lederer’s sax tone is gruff and powerful, reflecting the spirit of 1960s jazz – in its swing, its deep consciousness, and its willingness to jump headfirst into total freedom when the moment calls for it. With Matt Wilson’s hard-hitting, shape-shifting drums, Buster Williams’ veteran voice on bass and Jamie Saft’s all-encompassing piano, how could this not be a winner? Hard to believe this is Lederer’s first album as a leader (at age 48). Play it now!
All tracks impressive. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 7, 8
1. 9:09 – touch of Ayler: mighty wail thrusts skyward over deep rocking rhythm
2. 8:04 – awesome gospel-soul: killer blues groove w/organ, blastin’ sax solo!
3. 4:41 – weird clarinet/piano melody breaks apart into searching solos
4. 7:35 – propulsive, darting theme: vigorous soprano sax, wild piano accents
5. 2:44 – slow and mysterious, a cool cinematic drag
6. 6:25 – quirky clarinet steps gingerly, gets squirrelly over enigmatic rhythm
7. 9:22 – old spiritual with a shuffle beat, sax builds up pressure, others stroll
8. 10:45 – long slow intro, eventually finds lovely walking rhythm, sweet solos
