ELIANE ELIAS: Light My Fire
Concord Picante, 2011
BRAZILIAN JAZZ – Light and breezy, sultry and sexy, the latest from singer/pianist Elias is a potpourri of originals and covers, including a few American pop songs. I’ve never been crazy about her singing in English, but in Portuguese it’s delicious. Gilberto Gil guests on 3,7,10.
Pronunciation: "eh-lee-AH-neh eh-LEE-ahs"
Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11
1. 4:17 – lilting glide with nice acoustic guitar and a very fine vocal
2. 4:02 – soul-jazz classic, a sexy little wiggle with English vocal
3. 5:18 – fun vocal duet with infectious melody and happy rhythm… a winner!
4. 5:38 – Doors classic turned into slow, sultry seduction with a cool pulse
5. 4:00 – bouncy samba: light & simple at first, then big & joyful
6. 4:30 – Stevie Wonder tune, lilting and very romantic
7. 4:22 – lightly stomping vocal duet, maybe a little overproduced but catchy
8. 3:27 – nice rolling groove, vocal & piano solo keep it simple
9. 5:12 – contemporary ballad: English vocal, sweet piano, nice bass
10. 3:39 – light, uptempo vocal duet: a happy bounce in Portuguese & English
11. 5:12 – “Take Five” as a smooth, seamless spiral: wordless vocal & trumpet
12. 4:46 – lush, gliding sound: bilingual vocal floats on rich piano & percussion
