RENT ROMUS’ LORDS OF OUTLAND: Edge of Dark
Edgetone, 2011

AVANT-GARDE – Bay Area saxophonist Romus says the tracks in this deep, otherworldly set were inspired by the writings of Frank Herbert, Philip K Dick and H.P. Lovecraft, and you can pick that up in the lumpy, surrealistic textures and bloopy electronic undercurrents. But it’s still approachable in a weird, outré way. Vinny Golia adds a second sax voice (along with other winds) and brings a lot to the table.

Try any track. Fo’s Picks: 1, 4, 5, 6, 7

1. 7:29 – slow & low, darkly surreal over scattered drums, density increases
2. 7:28 – slouching, shape-shifting: piccolo shadows sax, then sax interplay
3. 7:24 – exotic horns & fast drums; urgent improv like alien jungle chatter
4. 3:08 – floppy march riffs, gives way to hard, careening duo-sax improv
5. 9:35 – warped & lumpy with highly agitated piccolo/sax and vocal noise
6. 4:30 – weird electronic warbles, sax squeals, robotic bass, crashing drums
7. 7:26 – slowly expands as sax solo busts out, collapses, two-sax arguement
8. 9:27 – exotic desert bass, slow-mo saxes into spinning solos, busy drums
