NEW TRICKS: Alternate Side
self-released, 2011
POSTBOP – This trumpet/sax/bass/drum quartet is willing to take risks: their “chordless” sound is open and loose enough for everybody to move freely in solos, but the group is also firmly grounded in the swingin’ traditions of straightahead jazz. The results are a mixed bag: when it clicks they sound really fresh with plenty of simpatico jump, but some other tracks just seem to wander without much focus.
Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 7, 8, 9
1. 6:50 – upbeat, swinging walk: trumpet skews & sax rolls with it
2. 8:33 – popping tune in very loose ¾ time; great sax solo & cool drum work
3. 8:27 – quick drive, horns trade off swinging solos, then bounce off rhythm
4. 8:18 – slow, casual slide: expands with a sax/bass duet, very nice trumpet
5. 6:35 – chugging, riff-based tune, dull with exercise-like solos
6. 9:57 – rhythmic intro, builds up momentum as solos roam and search
7. 9:42 – warm midtempo: twisty bass solo, horns ramble over tough drums
8. 7:15 – jabbing uptempo: sax rolls over driving rhythm, trumpet teases
9. 4:40 – jumps: horns trade off over odd-meter rhythms, jumbled but cool
