MONKS OF SAINT-BENOÎT ABBEY / Pax: Gregorian Chant
Analekta, 2010
The Benedictine monastery of Saint-Benoît was founded in 1912 in Southeastern Québec. The chants recorded here are on a theme of peace, particularly, symbolically, Jesus as the Prince of Peace. Gregorian chant is the central tradition of Western plainchant, a form of monophonic liturgical music that accompanied the celebration of Mass and other ritual services. It is named after Pope Gregory I (590 to 604), traditionally credited with ordering the simplification and cataloging of music assigned to specific celebrations in the church calendar. The chants on this disc are sung in modes (collections of tones) that differ from those of most music of the 17th-20th centuries and sound other-worldly. The melodies move mostly by single steps and thirds. A syllable may receive one or more melody tones. There is no countermelody or accompaniment. The sound reverberates in the church. I find little reason to choose one track over another. All are solemn; none sounds happy or celebratory and modern listeners will not recognize the Latin texts.
