KENNY WERNER: Balloons
Half Note, 2011
MODERN JAZZ – Impressive quintet recorded live at the Blue Note in New York. These pieces evolve slowly, with an emphasis on emotion and harmony – and both of those aspects run very deep indeed. The band is stocked with star players who clearly feel this music: their solos are truly eloquent and their group rapport feels absolutely seamless.

1. 12:20 – hauntingly graceful and bittersweet, with spirited piano & sax solos
2. 11:49 – optimistic feel: solos really sing over churning rhythm, great trumpet
3. 17:48 – naïve whimsy mixed with aching sadness: lengthy piano intro and pensive bass, then flugelhorn and sax take flight in gorgeous solos
4. 11:45 – upbeat, with highly complex structure and a very cool drum solo
