CARLO DE ROSA’S CROSS-FADE: Brain Dance

MODERN JAZZ – Bassist Carlo De Rosa’s name may not be familiar, but he’s assembled one heck of a quartet. De Rosa and pianist Vijay Iyer each trade off electric and acoustic instruments, Mark Shim’s sax is lively and inventive, and Justin Brown keeps things hopping on drums. The tunes are unusual, mostly built up from abbreviated, offbeat melodic phrases.

2. 7:14 – solo bass sets up tricky, winding theme: piano runs the maze, sax digs in

4. 7:11 – heavy, slow-chugging tune: sax percolates, but agitated piano blows it up
