Album Review
Gorilla Man Jr.
Reviewed 2011-06-21
Instrumental indie pop from Northern New Jersey. These are more mood pieces than tightly-structured songs. Occasionally reminiscent of Dirty Projectors. A lot of synth, layers and layers of guitar. I recommend tracks 2, 9, and 11. No FCCs.

1. Discordant guitar and cymbals for 30 seconds or so, moving into a quick series of staccato guitar parts. Dirty Projectors comes to mind. (1:48)
2. *Happy. A bouncing acoustic guitar gives a consistent upbeat feel, while the double-tracked electric guitar provides a more serene feel. And of course, what happy song wouldn’t be complete with some falsetto “oohs” (2:43)
3. Thirty seconds of a guitar being plugged in. (0:32)
4. Uptempo, which dips in the middle. Another Dirty Projectors-type song. Multiple guitars move in bursts, undercutting one another at times. Non-standard drums. The end has a beautiful call and response between a high-pitched distorted guitar and the rest of the instruments. (4:20)
5. *Slow, acoustic. Reminds me of Led Zeppelin’s Bron-Yr-Aur. I just wish it were longer. (1:17)
6. Interlude. (0:34)
7. A slow, synth-dominated track. Begins with a cool synth sound, spare drums. As soon as it starts to feel meandering, it switches up briefly then goes back. (3:23)
8. Busy synth waves up and down, while another organ-sounding synth moves slowly and somberly. (2:42)
9. **Starts slowly, then bursts around a minute but maintains a midtempo reflective feel. It’s a slow propulsion. constant quarter note drum beats. Echoes. Nice slide guitar parts. (3:40)
10. Ethereal synth and soaring electric guitar. (1:41)
11. *Complex drum machine. A twangy slide guitar comes in, and you understand why it is called “Butterfly.” Though maybe “Bumblebee” would have been a better title. about halfway through it almost all fades out, giving way to clean electric guitar strums. It picks up again (4:17)
12. Plucky guitar part. Some Jack White sounding electric guitar with a nice little riff. (3:12)
