Prince Fatty – Supersize
Reviewed by Sadie O., 1/14/11
British roots/dub/dancehall crew led by producer Mike “Prince Fatty” Pelanconi and featuring a nice variety of guest vocalists. Some tracks are roots, some are terrific dub, some more dancehall, but all are just great. So I’ve only awarded two sets of stars – two are for great and 3 are for awesomely excellent.
1. 3:25 **relaxed midtempo bubble, sweet lover’s rock vocals.
2. 2:44 ***dubby upbeat dancehall skank, great voices in both the singer and toaster (who is one of the originators of toasting).
3. 2:56 ***dancehall skank, hip hop style toaster. ODB tribute.
4. 3:17 **pretty keyboard-driven midtempo rock steady dub. Hollie Cook does smatterings of vocals (Paul Cook of the Sex Pistol’s daughter, recently vocalist with the Slits.)
5. 3:36 **swingy, jazzy, laid-back rock steady, sweet love song.
6. 3:35 ***downtempo super-dub, bits of toast.
7. 4:04 **minimalist midtempo dubble bubble, dub Curtis Mayfield cover.
8. 2:53 **bouncy rootsy midtempo one-drop, pretty but inscrutable singing about Columbus, not dubby.
9. 4:43 ***VERY dubby downtempo bubble in a lover’s rock stylee. Song then dub and toast, 12” style.
10. 2:55 ***dubby, bouncy bubble, fine dub cover of the Mighty Diamonds classic.
11. 3:22 ***bouncy uptempo dub with crazed dancehall vocals – insane in the membrane. Nutz! (he says “damn” a few times – if that sounds like an FCC to you, then don’t play it….)
