EASTERN BOUNDARY QUARTET: Icicles
Konnex, 2010
POSTMODERN JAZZ – Bridging parallel strands from New York and Budapest, as well as between the avant-garde, standard jazz and Hungarian folk music, this quartet brings a sense of immediacy and adventure to their performance. Well-played music, not too abstract but quite challenging and cerebral in spots, tenderly emotional in others.
Mihály Borbély : sax, tarogato
Michael Jefry Stevens : piano
Joe Fonda : bass
Balázs Bágyi : drums
Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5, 6
1. 8:41 – sax and piano stretch out, bending & twisting against a brisk pulse
2. 10:05 – slow ballad: tender piano, soft-spoken sax & bass, hushed drums
3. 3:39 – calm horn/drum duet: Hungarian melody flutters and soars
4. 9:10 – starts with strong Hungarian melody/rhythm; soon switches to abstract solos and an avant-jazz pulse; piano pulls it outward
5. 5:14 – slow, peaceful tune, billows with a sort of misty majesty; nice piano
6. 6:55 – cool groove: sax/piano swoop & cry over a solidly churning beat
7. 6:29 – contemplative, fluttering ballad with a soulful touch
