MATT DARRIAU PARADOX TRIO: With Bojan Z.
Felmay, 2010
WORLD JAZZ – Here’s a great set of postmodern jazz with a strong Balkan flavor. Darriau’s band of NY improvisers is joined by Bojan Zulfikarpašic, a like-minded French-Serbian pianist, and together they make music blending slippery melodies, bold improvisation and old-world percussion. Highly engaging music, unusual but not far out at all.
Matt Darriau : reeds, kaval, gaida
Bojan Zulfikarpašic; : piano
Brad Shepik : guitar, tambura
Rufus Cappadocia : 5-string cello, baritone guitar
Seido Salifoski : dumbek, percussion
All tracks very good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 5, 7
1. 4:18 – spiky theme; piano & sax solos zoom at oblique angles
2. 6:50 – bright, undulating melody: features “faux clarinet” & tambura (lute)
3. 9:02 – slower, shifting: clarinet wails, serious tambura groove, lyrical piano
4. 5:32 – upbeat, jumps & runs: cool breaks for cello, clarinet, space-out guitar
5. 8:02 – spooky intro, slashing theme with folksy-fusion feel: great flute work
6. 4:58 – spinning ensemble tune: cello energizes, piano adds a lot of flavor
7. 8:07 – quick pulse: catchy melody, nice percussion, guitar & soprano sax fly
8. 2:58 – soothing melody like crashing waves, but bagpipe makes it exotic
