REBECCA MARTIN: When I Was Long Ago
Sunnyside, 2010

JAZZ VOCALS – Shadowy and mysterious: backed only by bass and saxophone, singer Rebecca Martin’s distinctive, raspy voice calls out in wide-open spaces, an odd tone delivered with a creak and a moan, all aching fragility and cracked, dusty mirrors. No, it isn’t exactly cheery, but Martin is an excellent, enigmatic stylist; plumbing the murkiest depths of these old standards and making them sound, if not new, then definitely much darker and less familiar. Great work all around.

Rebecca Martin: vocals
Larry Grenadier: bass
Bill McHenry: saxophones
