Here's a very pleasing set of somewhat alternative, folkie, countryish (but not all of ‘em) pop songs, all written and sung by Canadian Jenny Whiteley. Her singing is unstrained & very natural, like a Catie Curtis or Margo Timmins, not at all like the divas who dominate country radio these days. Backing musicians are skillful and restrained. RIYL Cowboy Junkies, etc.
No FCC issues. Be Sharp’s Picks: 3, 4, 6 are the most countryish; 1, 2, 10 are less so.
1. * A cute Tin Pan Alley style pop song. Girlish vocal. Nice jazzy guitar. (2:54)
2. * A pretty, slow ballad with playful accompaniment. (3:34)
3. ** Mid-tempo toe tapper. Country-ish vocal. Cool pedal steel & organ. (3:51)
4. ** Slow, broken-hearted waltz. This one is definitely country. And outstanding. (4:02)
5. * Slow blues-country-rock ballad. She’s done with him. Good crunchy guitar solo. (4:00)
6. ** Up-tempo and fun. Corny country. Nice male backing vox. Good guitar & mandolin solos. This is a hightlight. “Yoohoo” (3:12)
7. Slow love song. More rock than country. The bluesy electric guitar is strong; the song isn’t. (3:48)
8. Slow and broken hearted yet again. Pedal steel is featured. (4:28)
9. She’s finally moved on to telling him off. 80s pop vox & organ. (2:55)
10. * Jazzy mid-tempo sashay. Neither sad nor happy. Perhaps resigned? Cool organ solo. (3:01)
