EMILIO SOLLA & TANGO JAZZ CONSPIRACY: Bien Sur!
Fresh Sound, 2010

WORLD JAZZ – This Argentinean pianist (now part of the New York scene) weaves forceful modern jazz with hints of folk melody and nuevo-tango drama. A strong quintet (expanded on several tracks) keeps things tight and tense or softly melodic as needed.

* * * * | Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5, 6

1. 7:46 – blaring bagpipe sets up a hard roll: soprano sax, accordion solos
2. 6:34 – unusual stirring melody: piano/sax/acc stay close; lyrical piano solo
3. 8:50 – Billy Hart’s drums are featured on a rambling, tango-inflected journey
4. 8:05 – lovely tango ballad: nice piano touch, sensitive bass, romantic sax
5. 7:37 – lyrical and folksy: twin sax interplay, nice rhythm, builds up energy
6. 9:55 – fragile intro, then sneaky: several drummers, strong piano/bass solos
7. 4:34 – very pretty tune, wafts gently to and fro with sweet vocal in Spanish
