CHICAGO UNDERGROUND DUO: Boca Negra
Thrill Jockey, 2009
AVANT-GARDE – Duets by Rob Mazurek and Chad Taylor (mixing it up with cornet/flute/drums/percussion/electronics/etc.). Some tracks are freely improvised, all have a wandering nature. These guys have been working together a long time, and that experience shows in a tight cohesion of musical conception despite the wide-ranging repertoire.
* * * * | All interesting. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 5, 7, 8, 10
1. 7:08 – cornet & flute wander over deep rumbling drums, many little grooves
2. 4:26 – gloopy sounds: thumb piano, squeaks & electronics; becomes a walk
3. 7:25 – quiet but dense layers, spare vibes and trilling cornet buried in mix
4. 4:41 – like #2: slow sci-fi abstraction transmutes into very quiet folksy stroll
5. 6:24 – stark, dramatic piano/cornet intro; shifts into a ballsy rockin’ jam
6. 4:40 – pretty electronics, spiraling melodic patterns
7. 6:39 – relentless, rolling drum & filtered cornet jam, mysterioso spy vibes
8. 5:25 – grungy distortion effects warp a very pretty kalimba/cornet folksong
9. 4:08 – scattered electronic reverb-fest; a processional from another planet
10. 4:55 – dreamy electronic groove; relaxed horn, spare drums, pretty gongs
