REZ ABBASI: Things to Come
Sunnyside, 2009
MODERN JAZZ – Abbasi is a very fine Pakistani-American guitarist, whose sinuous style and fuzzed/ringing tone may be familiar from Rudresh Mahanthappa’s recent work or other recordings blending modern jazz ideas with elements of South Asian music. Here Abbasi leads a strong band with Mahanthappa, Vijay Iyer and singer Kiran Ahluwalia through a serious set of very thoughtful, chewy tunes.
Rez Abbasi - guitars
Rudresh Mahanthappa - alto sax
Vijay Iyer - piano
Johannes Weidenmueller - bass
Dan Weiss - drums
Kiran Ahluwalia - vocals (2,3,4,6)
Mike Block - cello (2,7)
* * * * | Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 5, 6
1. 7:54 – thick compound rhythm, brooding: bright piano & sax, gritty guitar
2. 8:02 – quiet mystery: winding vocal, inquisitive sax, incisive guitar
3. 7:03 – ponderous feel, complex rhythm, acrobatic vocal, drifts & rushes
4. 1:57 – delicate guitar/vocal interlude
5. 7:28 – lilting melody slides into knotty guitar/sax dialogue; cool drum work
6. 10:57 – catchy/floating: sweet guitar & vox, sax has an edge, piano surge
7. 9:04 – intriguing harmonies; shifting theme; solos splash and spray
8. 5:31 – upbeat & twisty, bass solo calms it down, then everyone dives in
