TAYLOR HO BYNUM & SPIDERMONKEY STRINGS: Madeleine Dreams
Firehouse 12
AVANT-GARDE – Cornetist Bynum’s interesting group features a string quartet, tuba, guitar and drums, plus vocals. The first 6 tracks of this CD are a suite, with surrealist, poetic dream texts taken from a novel written by Bynum’s sister. The music is itself dreamlike, ethereal and calmly inscrutable. The rest is a tribute to Bynum’s musical heroes.
Taylor Ho Bynum - cornet, flugelhorn
Kyoko Kitamura - voice
Jason Kao Hwang - violin
Jessica Pavone - viola
Tomas Ulrich - cello
Pete Fitzpatrick - guitar
Joseph Daley - tuba
Luther Gray - drums
* * * * | Fo’s Picks: 2, 5, 8, 9
1. 1:34 – spoken word and slow, mysterious strings
2. 5:31 – relaxed, quietly padding rhythm, high stretched vocal, soft & sneaky
3. 2:31 – spoken word against chamber strings: tells a brief story
4. 2:48 – cornet & tuba skritch over dissonant strings; brief spoken word
5. 10:20 – longer, wide-ranging piece: follows a twisting dream with dynamic vocal, heavy shifting layers, melodic murmurs and quiet scribbles
6. 1:15 – spoken word; musically reprises #1
7. 4:16 – Ornette Coleman: cornet/tuba/drums; gives way to slow vocal/strings
8. 9:02 – Duke Ellington: atmospheric intro, then ghostly swing; vocal screech!
9. 8:25 – Sun Ra: space guitar, tumult, twisted march: everyone pulls together
