MEDESKI MARTIN & WOOD: Radiolarians II
Indirecto, 2009
JAZZ/ROCK/WHATEVER – College radio darlings MMW continue their groove-based, genre-defying ways in the “Radiolarians” series (we’re missing the first release), with a bit less emphasis on funkiness and more on capturing the creative spark. It’s mostly on the quieter side, with a good balance here between flat-out jamming and thoughtful jazz soloing, or between the atmosphere and the scenery. Solid work.
* * * * | All good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 10
1. 4:25 – sinister chunky groove: chugging intro, blaring theme, soft piano solo
2. 5:25 – abstract echoing sets up a grimy futuristic blues/dub jam; the title fits
3. 6:26 – quiet walking groove, fine drum patter: stony piano, soft floating end
4. 6:46 – funhouse atmosphere, many odd sound effects, gloopy & unsettling
5. 4:42 – moody piano becomes upbeat; soulful jazz vibe with cool chords
6. 4:34 – circular groove: quiet / loud / quiet / loud / tinkly quiet / rockin’ jam
7. 4:05 – slurred electronics, funky drum beats, radio static… surreal sound
8. 3:54 – relentlessly upbeat: monotone groove, rhythmic piano, happy drums
9. 5:02 – happy jam with reggae-style melodica/organ, a loose feel
10. 5:55 – slow, quiet cover of an old-time blues, jazzy and slightly abstracted
