PATTI LITTLEFIELD & MARK WEAVER: Resonance
Plutonium, 2008
VOICE/TUBA DUETS – Here’s a unique sound out of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Singer Littlefield pulls and stretches her voice in odd directions: she plays it straight or a bit “out,” but makes either approach sound unsettling. Weaver’s tuba (or didgeridoo or trombone) adds rhythmic bass lines, color, and texture. Full band on 6 & 8. FCC clean.
* * * * | All interesting. Fo’s Picks: 1, 4, 6, 9
1. 3:19 – standard: vocal winds around tuba bassline; erotic poetry break
2. 5:01 – sardonic vocal delivery with walking tuba line, some basic scatting
3. 7:11 – slow, dissonant: tuba/trombone drone; poetic lyric, scat from space; second half scatting over an oblique walking rhythm
4. 4:36 – exotic: didgeridoo bounce, mysterious vocal expands/contracts
5. 4:02 – sinuous vocal, interesting lyric over busy tuba bassline
6. 6:54 – old tune, new sound: slow didgeridoo/guitar/drums, passionate vocal
7. 4:42 – standard: creeping/slinking vocal over spare tuba; wordless section
8. 6:30 – 1960s country classic: slow tuba/guitar/drums, storytelling vocal gets intense!
9. 2:47 – tuba & handclaps sound like a polka! overdubbed scatting vocals
