JOHN WILLIAM GORDON: Technot
self-released, 2009
“MUTANT JAZZ” – Bay Area-based electric guitarist with a spiky, staccato approach and sparkling tone. He leads a trio through playfully lumpy, accessible avant-garde compositions, and has fun doing it.
* * * | Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 5, 6, 10
1. 4:00 – midtempo gloopy march, loose-limbed solo, picks up a bit of groove
2. 6:20 – lopsided, uptempo clusters; guitar solo scratches at a speedy rhythm
3. 3:55 – mellow, pillowy tune, settles into repeated riffs
4. 6:32 – exotic gliding groove with a Miles Davis-y fusion touch
5. 2:18 – improvisation: spacious atmosphere, first gloomy, then mysterious
6. 5:33 – goofy walk with rhythmic outbursts, strutting bass solo
7. 5:59 – starts upbeat, bright melodic; then bass calms things for a long solo
8. 2:37 – improvisation: moody, with creaking bass and quiet drums
9. 3:35 – relaxed walking rhythm, stepping melody, breaks down in middle
10. 3:09 – improvisation: guitar spangs over groaning bass, brushed drums
