JARRETT/PEACOCK/DeJOHNETTE: Yesterdays
ECM, 2009
BOP – For 25 years, this esteemed group has set a benchmark for both the mainstream piano trio and the performance of jazz standards. Although they have occasionally veered into adventurous territory, this live set (Tokyo, 2001) finds them very much in a straight-ahead mode. It’s all well played and recorded, but not essential listening.
* * * | Fo’s Picks: 3, 4
1. 8:12 – relaxed sunny-day stroll, classy presentation; everyone takes it easy
2. 10:12 – lively pace, bright piano dominates, but drums get some late action
3. 8:55 – delicate ballad: wistful with a touch of heartache, a whisper of blues
4. 6:10 – uptempo bebop: crisply articulated piano, everybody has a good time
5. 7:55 – romantic ballad with a warm, embracing feel
6. 9:01 – midtempo bebop, played loose, takes some chances early on
7. 8:17 – strolling midtempo: very friendly sound, lightly tripping piano
8. 8:32 – hushed, tender ballad: piano arcs gracefully over soft ground
9. 8:04 – midtempo steady bounce, piano keeps it simple
