MORGAN CHILDS QUINTET: Time
Cellar Live, 2008
HARD BOP – Classic jazz out of Vancouver, with obvious nods to Art Blakey, Cannonball Adderley, Clifford Brown. Some of the covers hew pretty closely to recognized arrangements, maybe too closely, but the band shows a lot of love. Four originals allow a little more personality to emerge while retaining the familiar overall sound. Nice stuff.
* * * | Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 6
1. 9:10 – midtempo bounce, exotic theme and easygoing solos
2. 5:51 – perky tune, catchy little theme: lively sax, happy piano
3. 9:23 – laid-back good-time groove, sounds like a Cannonball Adderley tune
4. 8:10 – speedy bop: trumpet burbles, piano jumps nicely, drums roll
5. 5:15 – dragging ballad: relaxed sax, muted trumpet, warm and friendly
6. 9:53 – upbeat, snappy bounce: sax glides, trumpet adds grit
7. 5:27 – smoky, late-night ballad; trumpet and piano in front
8. 5:46 – another snappy bounce: starts catchy but doesn’t lift off.
9. 10:13 – pleasant closing tune, everybody’s happy, just chugs along
