GILFEMA: Gilfema + 2
Obliqsound, 2008

WORLD JAZZ – The second disc by this international trio of rising jazz stars (featuring Benin-born Lionel Loueke on guitar/vocals) brings in two more young favorites (Anat Cohen and John Ellis on clarinets), adding a reedy new dimension to the collective’s multicultural sound.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 5, 8

1. 5:19 – warm African feel: gentle walking rhythm, layered vox & bright guitar
2. 4:13 – light daydream, chugging theme: high wordless vox & careful picking
3. 5:34 – cool rhythm, low-key stroll with happy clarinets & good vocal
4. 6:03 – intriguing instrumental, subtle with a fusion touch, very strong bass
5. 3:43 – very “world” sounding with loping beat, bright ocarina, nice vocal
6. 6:27 – slow clarinets, nifty drums, wordless vocals harmonize with guitar
7. 4:22 – happy world groove, good trio interplay with horns at the edges
8. 5:21 – elusive, sketchy guitar melody; shifting tempo, spoken interjections
9. 7:19 – gentle sway, careful modern-jazz melody, sweet clarinets
10. 4:13 – sneaky intro, modern-jazz groove with flexible rhythm
