CARRIER / LAMBERT / AVENEL: Within
Leo, 2008
FREE JAZZ – French bassist Jean-Jacques Avenel joins the Quebecois duo of François Carrier (sax) and Michel Lambert (drums) for this spirited yet approachable free session. Carrier’s melodic sound welcomes rather than attacks, as Avenel builds an eloquent bridge over Lambert’s tireless, undulating drumming. Recorded live in Calgary.
Fo's Picks: 1, 2
1. 12:13 – sax flutters and muses over dense, turbulent drums & low bass; later, bass & drums have deep dialogue as sax squeaks & moans; second half generally calmer with great trio interaction.
2. 40:18 – low, skittery start; keening sax & bowed bass, busy yet relaxed feel: moves through group squeaks, quiet near-bop, taut energy, exotic atmospheres, etc.; each player gets plenty of time out front and fills it up. Switching to thumb piano at the halfway point, Avenel creates a cool world-jazz environment for about 10 minutes. Neat stuff.
3. 07:57 – aggressive snare drum, displeased-sounding sax, chatty bass; pulls back a bit but maintains a fairly steady level throughout.
