MIKE DiRUBBO QUARTET: New York Accent
Cellar Live, 2007
MODERN BOP – Hard-swinging quartet featuring Harold Mabern on piano, recorded at the swank (and tiny) Kitano Hotel lounge in NYC. This is the sort of set that’s better for its imperfections, an honest band playing a regular gig, just getting into it and having a good time.
All very good! Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5, 7
1. 7:08 – “Giant Steps” inspired bop line, loose-limbed and hard-charging
2. 7:31 – relaxed tempo, intriguing melody; soprano sax has a dash of vinegar
3. 6:11 – propulsive postbop groove with a classic ‘70s feel, vigorous solos
4. 10:24 – swinging midtempo bop, a friendly jam with happy solos all around
5. 6:40 – lush Ellington ballad: nice smoky sax and great piano comping
6. 10:04 – Billy Joel tune (!!) gets the “My Favorite Things” treatment: goofy melody, strong jazz-waltz groove, great extended sax solo
7. 9:17 – punchy postbop groove, catchy and clicking; drums get some action
