ELLIOTT SHARP’S TERRAPLANE: Forgery
Intuition, 2007
Holy shit!!! This industrial strength blend of SHREDDING GUITAR, STOMPING BLUES-ROCK and AVANT-GARDE JAZZ HORNS will peel the paint off your walls, get you off your ass and tease your brain cells all at the same time. Singer Eric Mingus (son of Charles) channels everybody from Robert Johnson to Captain Beefheart, while the band veers from punkish energy to skewed picking to spiky improv.
Fo’s Picks: ALL
1. 5:24 – blues: driving assault: wild filtered vox, screaming sax, dirty guitar
2. 4:54 – blues: lowdown, howling anti-war lament, BIG vox & gritty guitar
3. 5:20 – poetry: great fem vox about Katrina, funky New Orleans rhythm
4. 5:31 – twangy western: honking sax, grinding trombone, awesome guitar
5. 4:01 – blues stomp: a tribute to deceased drummer Lance Carter
6. 5:48 – downtown jazz: drunken horns stagger & squeal over march beat
7. 4:58 – blues: straight-up and soulful electric blues-rock groove
8. 5:38 – improv: loose-stringed guitar, slow horns, quiet, then grows agitated
9. 5:32 – avant jazz: layered; abstract guitar gets bluesy, horns walk above
10. 2:31 – country blues: relaxed duet -- high-pitched vox & nice guitar
11. 2:42 – roadhouse blues: simple blues-rock ditty with a fun vocal riff
