JOE FIEDLER TRIO: The Crab
Clean Feed, 2007
Good postmodern jazz: Trombonist Fiedler has a long resume in mainstream, latin and avant-garde jazz settings, so it’s not surprising that this CD mixes things up. Fiedler has great technique, liberally using multiphonics and other sound-stretching methods, and his sidemen are equally malleable. Appealing, accessible weirdo jazz.
All good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 5… maybe 8, 9
1. 7:30 – perky theme; growling trombone & rhythm wander all over the place
2. 5:13 – sneaky muted trombone, great string-bending bass, pattering drums
3. 3:10 – quick free jazz: long noodly solos, plus two down ‘n’ dirty breaks
4. 4:29 – quiet ballad with really grungy trombone, eloquent bass
5. 5:45 – laid-back march, great trombone solo gets knotty
6. 5:19 – casual, quirky melody; conversational solos
7. 5:25 – multiphonic trombone over slow bassline, picks up later
8. 4:50 – percolating melody, cool drums, trombone strides & scribbles
9. 5:06 – warbling solo trombone intro, then a loose-limbed avant groove
