For fans of New Pornographers, Camera Obscura, My Favorite, even Kristin Hersh (without the cynicism), this is poignant, produced indie pop that at times is picture perfect and at other times a tad too commercial. Ms. Pollock was a founding member of the Scottish band The Delgados.
This is on 4AD, but it goes without saying that 4AD has changed over the years. Did Ivo produce this? In any case, this is great ‘girl’ music and perfect for the autumn season. I listened to this twice and think that the best songs are memorable. Lots of chord and key changes in most of the tracks.
Most songs will do, but start with 3, 4, 7, 11
1 Circus-like waltz 9/8, key changes, ambient theremin-like backing in verse
2 G minor, 4/4, mid-fast, rocking
3 Piano, slower, layered
4 Wistful, melancholy, slow ballad, acoustic guitar and piano, pretty
5 Faster, Throwing-Muses-ish circa House Tornado,
6 Faster, 9/8, piano, cathartic, vocals sound very familiar
7 3/4, very nice, memorable ballad waltz, pretty
8 Has a ‘60s feel, very nice bridge that just stops
9
10 Camera-Obscura like straight ahead indie pop
11 Epic, ‘power’ but relaxed ballad
