MANHATTAN NEW MUSIC PROJECT: Jazz Cycles
MNMP, 2007
MODERN JAZZ – Composer/bandleader Paul Nash, who led the Bay Area Composers Orchestra in the 1980s, spent the final year of his life gathering his various compositions into a set of definitive documents. This disc is the first part of that legacy. It features not-quite mainstream pieces meant to reflect Nash’s 30-year musical journey, recorded by his final band. Very fine writing, crisp performances, a lovely disc.
Fo’s Picks: 1-2, 6, 11-12
Note: This CD is really a suite, but it can also be broken up as shown below...
1-2. 7:17 – guitar motif picked up by horns; impassioned sax, then becomes a hot bumping groove, solos for bass, guitar, sax
3-5. 9:43 – gentle ballad with some odd angles lurking inside, free segue into insistent theme, soft-edged piano & burning sax, solo bass
6. 2:55 – slurring group improv over sinister bass
7. 3:10 – uplifting chords, contemporary sound, warm round of solos
8. 2:40 – comfortable, soulful ballad, horns in unison, sax break
9-10. 1:06 – very brief interludes
11-12. 12:13 – cool midnight swing, very nice piano & upbeat sax; solo guitar interlude, drum solo, then gently propulsive with friendly solos
13. 2:13 – variation on #3, with a long pause in the middle
14. 9:57 – burgeoning ‘70s jazz sound, updated a bit; warm and pleasant
15. 1:13 – reprise of #2
