MONK’S MUSIC TRIO: Monk on Mondays
CMB, 2007

LOCAL BOP – This is, not surprisingly, an album of Thelonious Monk tunes. Led by a pair of Bay Area veterans (drummer Chuck Bernstein and pianist Si Perkoff), the band has held a regular gig in San Francisco since 1999. This homebrewed recording (their 4th), puts the emphasis on Monk’s swing and sense of fun in a faithful, solid reading. I like!

Try any track, especially: 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11

1. 6:00 – clomping midtempo swing
2. 4:37 – happy quasi-Latin groover
3. 4:44 – perky up/midtempo stroll
4. 6:55 – easygoing, romantic ballad
5. 4:43 – puffs like a steam engine
6. 5:50 – chugging and quirky; nice!
7. 6:50 – bright swingin’, good solos
8. 6:22 – after-hours blues drag
9. 4:59 – spiky swing, odd angles
10. 3:55 – burning, bouncy bebop!
11. 7:13 – laid-back, bluesy, catchy
12. 5:56 – heavy beat, plinky piano
13. 6:51 – drum intro, jamming tune
