MITCH MARCUS QUINTET: The Special
JazzCubed, 2007
Bay Area saxophonist, with a somewhat jagged modern-jazz approach that flirts with an avant-garde feel. Marcus pops and slides, guitarist Michael Abraham mixes a thick rock-based crunch with a light jangle, and the whole group neatly balances a well thought-out program with vibrant, slightly edgy playing. Good local music!

1. 09:40 – speedy groove, cutting guitar breaks, slippery sax
2. 11:37 – snappy angular riffs, sax dialogue, tense bass solo, noodly guitar
3. 13:27 – nervous theme, paranoid sax, moody guitar, then an upbeat walk
4. 14:47 – tick-tock rhythm, lots of quick changes and nifty, distracted solos
5. 05:39 – slow and kind of gloomy: plaintive sax, relaxed flugelhorn
6. 14:16 – oddball slow/fast theme; round of solos alternately clumpy & slick
7. 08:51 – quirky, percolating tune, swinging sax solo, big guitar takes it out
