Oh Canada! Another solid release from Smithsonian, exploring the rich & varied musical heritage of Canada. Sung in a variety of languages (no FCCs), they range from toe-tapping folk to traditional Native Canadian tribal songs, to historical tunes celebrating the trappers, traders, and sailors of Canada’s past. Read the notes for fascinating information on each. I really enjoyed every track and you really can’t go wrong just selecting something at random but, in the interest of space, I’ll just single out these: 1. Bright & bouncy medley of French-Canadian call/response tunes. 2. A classic Irish reel for fiddle & step dance. 4. Traditional Cree greeting song for chant & hand drum. 5. Fast harmonica-driven reel w/guitar & step dance. 6. Old-time recording, midtempo trapper-man folk song. 9. Guitar & male vox, midtempo love song…with worms. 10. Mandolin & vox, midtempo B.C. tugboat song 13. Toe-tapping Irish drinking song. 14. Tripping folk classic for guitar/vox. Fun & kind of lazy. 16. Old, scratchy recording, African-Canadian spiritual. Midtempo. 18. Chant/drum Cree song. 24. Claps, stepping, a live , upbeat square dance w/caller/fiddles. 25. Oddly catchy midtempo ode to the blackflies. 28. Upbeat version of “Scotland the Brave.” Bright, old-timey dance |
