Normand Guilbeault Ensemble – Mingus Erectus
A great tribute to the work of Charles Mingus by a quintet from Quebec. Unlike some who perform these tunes, they manage to keep the sense of barely controlled bluesy chaos that made the original albums the link between Ellington and the spiritual free jazz of the sixties. Not only do these guys nail the composed parts, but their soloing is fantastic. Play this disc!
*1. Deft bluesy groove, excellent solo/group improv
**2. Awesome driving swing
*3. Med tempo swing
4. Calypso featuring light flute
*5. Bluesy med tempo
**6. Great update of this classic to the 21st century. FCC: there’s a brief “shit” in the mayhem, but it’s hard to hear.
7. Slow, methodical original composition
**8. Fast gutbucket swing
