Pharoah Sanders – Pharoah’s First

Sanders’ first album recorded as a leader in 1964 finds him in a similar situation as John Coltrane around the same time, trying to play the “new thing” with a solidly “old thing” group. The tunes are straightforward solo vehicles and you can hear the beginnings of Pharoah’s distinctive voice between the Coltrane-isms. This disc is certainly an interesting historical document (especially the interviews), but musically it’s a bit bland. But hey.. not bad for his first shot!

1. Med tempo swing, Pharoah takes the first solo and gets pretty wild. The following solos aren’t that interesting.
2. Bouncy swing in a similar tempo with solos not as wild as the first track.

Tracks 3 – 7 are short interview segments.
