Several long pieces showcasing the shakuhachi, or Japanese bamboo flute. Fast tempo movements were more interesting to me than the slow movements. Liner notes are very informative.
1. Lively duet of the shakuhachi. During the slow movement, becomes more plaintive and reflective. Three movements - fast, slow, fast. (10:24)
2. Symbolizes the calling of a deer to its mate through the forest. High pitched flute conjures up emotions of acute longing. Very slow tempo. (10:46)
3. Duet of shakuhachi and nishaku-issun. Three movements - slow, fast, slow. Fast movement has colorful counterpoint dialogue of rhythms. (10:36)
4. Symbolizes portrait of doves. Four movements - medium (representation of dove cooing sounds), slow-fast (a quarrel takes place), slow-fast(playful flutters), slow (serious, doves return to roost). (12:21)
* 5. Symbolizes changing cloud formations. Three movements - fast, slow, fast. Last two movements particularly lovely. (9:54)
