Arum – Inhuman Echoes from the Shadows (Killzone Records)
Black metal, obviously. And it doesn’t try hard to be anything else. Raw, stripped-down, under-produced, sounding evil and dark and sinister, this one actually surprised me. The riffs have a tendency to repeat over and over and become almost hypnotic, and if you really focus on them, they seem to be quite progressive. The bass is what really caught my attention here, especially on the first half of the disc; there are a ton of places where the bass carries the melody line, and it sounds so surprisingly fantastic to hear clean bass on a record like this. Also, these guys are from Brazil, and they show it with some cool clean guitars and distinctive patterns.
Tracks:
1) Pointless intro, ignore.
2) Fast, thrashy start, very aggressive. Some nice double bass and guitar melodies, and check out that bass line at the 1:15 mark.
3) More of a groove song, but with blast beats and scaaaary vocals, followed by clean guitar. Again, check out that bass.
4) A terrific hypnotic intro riff that stays pretty much the same way, but the bass line underneath it just goes crazy, all over the place.
5) More of an aggressive edge, and this actually does the same hypnotic riff thing.
6) About three minutes of chanting and acoustic guitars, with other instruments joining in slowly.
7) Pure old-school black/thrash! This is awesome! Aggression up to 11, and just a ton of scorching guitar, blast beats, and evil vocals eventually transform into an almost-catchy groove-laden piece.
8) Starts out with a very fast riff and some killer blast beats, and then goes through many, many motions and change-ups, it even has a full-on keyboard solo/string section.
9) 15 seconds of noise, ignore.
10) The one song that will give you the perfect idea of what this band is about. A ton of change-up, fast thrashy parts, slow doomy groove parts, neat leads and bass work, and effective keys. Killer!
