HORACE X – “Sackbutt”
Omnium, 2003
THIS RULES! It's an unstoppable fun machine from Britain; a high-octane blend of ragga-style vocals, fast beats, tight horns... and fiddles! The band (basically a quintet) is known for performing in outrageous day-glo outfits under black light and has been described as being like "muppets on meth". FYI, the album title comes from the word "saqueboute," an old French trombone. WHEEEEEE!!!
Every track a winner! Fo's Picks: 1, 2, 4, 5, 9
1. 4:49 – dance, dammit! Fast, furious, booty-shakin' bouncy craziness
2. 5:24 – mad folk/old-school hiphop/reggae blend over a great breakbeat
3. 5:02 – middle eastern melody built over incessant bassline and movie samples
4. 4:48 – droning exotic fiddle intro; great edgy ragga vox and a sort of reptilian feel
5. 5:13 – surprise! Brit punk-pop energy (and guitars) in this one... very catchy, too!
6. 5:04 – a bit of Indi-pop, a bit of klezmer, and a whole lot of dancehall.
7. 5:44 – "I Want Candy" rhythm, vocal posturing, folk fiddle breaks, great clarinet solo
8. 4:13 – track 1 as instrumental, with an "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby" riff added
9. 5:05 – sort of a new wave vibe, almost monotone vox, sax & fiddle breaks
10. 4:33 – fast drum machine up front, fiddling & vox behind, good breaks
