Offshoot of Savage Republic has seen better outings. The basic sound is big, symphonic moments/melodies/arrangements meant to evoke the enormous skies over the desert combined with a sort of parsimony of emotion meant to evoke the unforgiving desert itself. In the past, Scenic has tended to twangy guitars as a balance between these forces. Here, they lean more toward the lush symphonies. Having said that, there are some beautiful moments of guitar but a bit too much overdone synth. If you listen to the album all the way through, in the right mood, it works pretty well but the individual tracks are less than these guys are capable of. Call it Inner Space Tripping (n.b., the titles of the album and of the last track). No vocals.
1. Pretty crescendos but the in-between parts are sort of generic; slow tempo
2. Mid-fast, guitar riffing tune; the sitar is a nice touch but where's the tune's development?
3. Pretty but too tame
4. Drone synth overlaid with piano noodling - does that sound New Age to you?
5. Urgh, frustrating - this guitar and cymbal drone thing is almost never more than filler
6. Now piano and sticky-sweet synth swirls
7. Synth and sitar filler
8. From an earlier single, the return of the twang and a less static rhythm than the preceding tracks; the guitar soloing here is more than just wankery and the chorus payoff is worth the wait
9. Nearly twenty minutes of spacy, tripped-out, mind-fried slow-jam
