[coll.]: ROUGH GUIDE TO HUNGARIAN MUSIC
World Music Network, 2002
Another eclectic set from the Rough Guide folks. As with other discs in the series, there’s all the stuff you expect plus about six trips into deep left field. So there are the usual folkdances, Gypsy drinking songs, and whatnot, but also electronica, rock, and even a little Hungaro-Indonesian fusion! Some artists are Hungarians living abroad. It isn’t all successful, but all of it is at least interesting. No time to choose? Pick something at random!
Fo’s Picks: 1, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 14, 17, 18
01. gamelan (!) w/monotone fem vocal
02. off-balance: slow rhythm, fast violin
03. plodding rock version of folk tune
04. loose, almost silly-sounding folk
05. old woman sings, then an orchestra
06. electronica remix of a gypsy tune
07. fast village dance; odd inst. mix
08. romantic gypsy band medley
09. slow, quiet, rather sad; trio vocal
10. offbeat indie-rock, diverse elements
11. tune for “long flute” (cool sound!)
12. 5-string fiddle and cello (really, it is)
13. bouncy village dance, good fiddle
14. lovely, subdued fiddle, dulcimer, vox
15. caffeinated kolo dance, quick pickin’
16. nifty vox in “Gipsy Kings”-ish medley
17. a little Romany rap! No kiddin’.
18. excellent folk medley; famous band
19. village music, sounds like “Carmen”
