Local singer/songwriter performs sans band, just solo vocal and acoustic guitar. Paula (nee Tarnation) has one of the strongest finest crystalline voices and here it sparkles alone. Songs are mostly newer and reflect a more pop/traditional Hazelwood approach than the Morricone darkness that permeated all things Tarnation. Paula’s talent really shines through in this recording. Her songwriting sounds like public domain/trad fare almost, familiar and timeless. And I still have yet to ever hear her sing a flat note, after all these years.
2) slight Spanish strumming, melodic, very slight minor tone
4) Tarnation song, waltzy ballad, sad and sweet, so fine…
6) Spanish strumming returns, frail and pretty melodies, minor chords, Morricone’isms in vocal acrobats
8) similar to previous song, very acrobatic and melodies are hooky, higher register makes it very pretty
10) newer sound for Paula, pop, upbeat, call/answer vocs done alone are rather busy yet work
12) Tarnation song: waltzy, dark, minor, Morricone, strummy, a classic by any standard, goosebumps all around
14) the best song on her latest album, Spanish strum again but more upbeat, but a magical mix of sad/happy, minor/major, with sad sad heartbreaking lyrics…too much
16) upbeat feel, still sad though
