Percussion is OUTSTANDING. Probably the best recording ever done by Sergio Mendes. The best of Brazil's percussionists and songwriters. All vocals in Portuguese, except #4. ***1: 100 percussionists from Rio's Samba de Escolas (samba schools) call and response drumming , the leader is setting the rhythm and tempo and the group responds, then everyone kicks in, female vocals. ****2: Samba reggae & baiao (folk style from the Northeast). Fast drumming and vocals. There is an MTV type video and it is GREAT **3: slower Samba reggae and Forro (fast style from the Northeast). Male and female vocals and chorus. *4: Bahian style rap, in English. Afoxe (African influenced). **5: Female vocalists, great percussion, mid tempo **6: gentle samba, female vocalists., great couples dance. 7: Male vocal and guitar, different structured samba, slower. 8: Funk, R&B, sax and guitar, female vocalists. 9: Carlinhos Brown vocal, pop, jazzy, slower. 10: female vocalists, slower, flute and oboe. 11: a samba in 3/4 time, female vocalists, means popcorn, possible reference to the people who at Carnaval time catch one group here and dash to a different part of the city to see some other group. ***12: Carlinhos Brown vocal, female chorus, fast, great singing and percussion. 13: slow, female vocal, guitar, cello and oboe. 14: short 0:29 seconds, batucadu( fast percussion) ` D Farrell 03/98 |
