What, a B-side retrospective already? Well, in any case, this CD does have some wonderful moments, documenting the rise of one of America’s great ragged noisy indie-rock bands.
Tracks we already have: 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 17
Different versions of tracks we have: 1, 3, 14, 16, 18
New tracks: 2, 6, 7, 12, 13, 15
Highlights:
3 poor production actually enhances an already cool song
4 Furious noise blitz!
5 starts out soft, builds well into a dark, rockin’ song
6 rocks! Fractured, twisted guitars melt into great melodies
10 Pixies-ish spacious-sounding production w/ acoustic guitar, great anthemic chime
11 slow & sparse, mostly background noise -- gets noisy in places but still sad and slow
12 Great groovin’ instrumental. When they played it in concert, they called it “Mark Price, Private Eye”.
14, 16 better versions of EP tracks
15 long, slow track, alternating soft/loud passages. Watch for false endings...
