Hazy, soupy, dreamy psychedelic woozecore: beautiful self-released album (nice to see a major album *not* be on Spotify), this double-album has really got under everyone's skin all year (should have been added/reviewed in the spring, but better late than never). Cindy Lee is the project of Patrick Flegel (they/them), formerly of Women--an act done in drag (btw, I delineated between masculine and feminine vocals in the track reviews, but this is purely about how the vocals present). Anyway, beautiful, dreamy, nostalgic sounds here. Most everything captures this same vibe/timber/mood, but some variation from track to track
DISC 1
1. (5:22) ****** fairly quiet intro for 20+ seconds (completely silent for 5); spidery guitar, dreamy; squonky strings, thumping, accelerates, hits vocals at 2 minutes in; very pretty and bittersweet and hazy
2. (4:10) **** old-timey hazy sounds on radio? into fuzzy guitar, rollicking country-rock in a haze... at 3 min in, becomes gloomy goth fingerpicking with ominous gong sounds til end
3. (3:55) *** bubblegum fuzz sounds, chanting ♂ “baby baby blue” vocals; stony, repetitive
4. (2:46) **** wistful, ♀ vox; distorted, reedy falsetto chorus, glassy, torch song sad, but with buzzy driving strings (?)
5. (3:00) ****** ♀ Sad, half-wailing, half-smirking; really pretty
6. (3:15) **** ♂ Little sad slow folk tune with public restroom acoustics, lingering outro
7. (1:31) ** Short instrumental; Neon electric string section, funk beat
8. (3:43) **** ♀ Mid-slow walking beat with far-away feeling
9. (2:04) ** Sweet guitar strumming; ♂--short, incomplete-feeling
10. (5:13) ***** Hazy co-ed duet sound, wistful and driving with drum-machine sounds, almost cyberpunk; triumphant fresh vibes... sudden clip-out end
11. (1:02) ** Church music interlude + Morricone vibes
12. (4:42) ****** My favorite track, sounds half amusement park, half heaven; angelic ♀ vox glitters over murky, sweet music hall/tango/stew wah-wah guitar, etc, etc; oh god this is so pretty--last minute outro is the sound of heaven
13. (4:24) *** Hypnotic but with a light touch; ♂ vox,
14. (3:32) **** ♀ slow, high school prom slowness and sadness; expressive and shambolic guitar break
15. (4:04) ** Very slow; ♂, doomy
16. (3:42) **** Instrumental, shimmery and pretty sounds of heavens, strings + more; very simple but very nice
DISC 2
1. (4:22) ***** Slinky, mysterious spy movie sounds; ♀ vox enter at 2 minutes, still slinky and funky
2. (2:56) **** Instrumental, bongos and doomy crunchy chase sequence sounds
3. (6:08) *** Slow hypnotic instrumental opening, ♀ vox at 2 minutes, chanting and oblique and slinky, somewhat atonal and strange
4. (4:39) *** ♂ vox, driving; strange/mysterious/slinky
5. (5:06) ***** Basement-y, ♀ vox, sad torch song turns into weird hopeful prom-my finger-snapping with tape-hiss soup and more
6. (2:57) ***** Sad ♀ vox, beautiful yearning melody, some spanish-inflected guitar
7. (3:33) **** Slow and somewhat warped co-ed duet, strange and distorted in background ways; SUDDEN ending, into->
8. (2:49) **** SUDDEN start (no intro, cut-off); ♀ vox, wistful yearning -- weird synths in bg; SUDDEN ending, into->
9. (4:01) **** sudden start (though not cut-off) ♀ vox, mid-tempo ... some severe guitar feedback midway
10. (3:04) ***** Very "Sleep Walk" guitar instrumental noodling, sweet and surreal
11. (4:48) ***** Sad, yearning ♀ vox, the yearning is so deep here; very sad, pretty
12. (3:29) **** Clearer than usual ♂ vox, hopeful morning sounds, birds chirping and more
13. (3:50) ***** Funky 60s nightclub bassline, ♀ vox a minute in, muddy and weird and dancy and sad
14. (5:24) ***** Sad fuzzy recording sound, ♂ vox, slow and hypnotic, but affecting, last minute faster
15. (3:13) ***** Sweet, hopeful 50s duet sound, ♀ vox dominates, like the hopeful parts of Twin Peaks
16. (5:25) ***** Instrumental, just the sound of resonant strings, texture of heaven; sudden ending
