If you like weird time signatures, sudden shifts, funny annoying voices, and dissonance, this is for you. The biggest British indie rock band of 2019 is noisy and spastic and would fit perfectly into the math-rock/post-rock world of 1999. The vibe here is peak college boys who play their instruments really well and listen to bands on Touch and Go and Drag City, feeling aggro and clever and overwhelmed and keen to channel it all. It’s not revolutionary, but it’s gratifying to see some of the weirdest strands of 90s rock see some love from a new generation. If this gets any bigger, any day now U.S. Maple should be getting a $500,000 offer to reunite and play Coachella. RIYL Slint, Chavez, Drive Like Jehu, Don Caballero, Shellac, Oxbow. Favorites: 1, 4, 6. FCC WARNING: 2, 5, 7, 9.

1. *(5:21)—Fast, starts in 5/4 before a mid-tempo breakdown. Slint/Drive Like Jehu vibes, but more manic. Thrashy end.
2. (3:18)—FCC (dogs***). Chintzy mid-tempo beat. Builds. Very Disco Inferno.
3. (3:30)—Fast and bouncy. Laid-back start, zany middle, breakneck finish.
4. *(2:21)—Fast, thrashy beginning. Slint gone pop? Some good screaming.
5. (8:09)—FCC (s***) Clean, soft beginning. Sudden jump in energy. Kinda sick artificial-sounding funk-punk middle. Long jammy end.
6. *(6:25)—Kind of a shoegazey start? The tempo goes up and down and up and down. Staticky electronics. Wheeeee! I’m thinking about Primus for the first time since I was 12.
7. (4:57)—FCC (“they find different ways to suck themselves off”). Mid-tempo one-note grind. Neurotic spoken-word vocals. Continuous sample of horror film screaming.
8. (2:35)—Loping to skittery. Soft group vocals as texture, in-the-red screaming. Death Grips vibe.
9. (6:43)—FCC (“take your hands off your dick”). Mid-tempo, starts as a warped version of bouncy indie pop. Dark Slint vibes, then a build. Repeats, but with a much more wilded out ending.
