Review: By looking forward while never losing sight of tradition, bass clarinetist Stein has modeled himself after the paths of jazz innovators before him to forge his own track. And for the last decade, his primary vehicle for blazing trails has been his Locksmith Isidore band, a nimble little combo. Stein really shows his mastery of this notorious beast of a horn, wresting out sounds from the full range of it with effortless dexterity.
If You Like: Eric Dolphy, David S. Ware, Steve Lacy
Track Review (favorites denoted by *):
*1/ As Many Chances As You Need (4:18) – loud blast from bass clarinet> midtempo off-kilter jam> bass clarinet solo swings wild> midtempo jam> quick stop
2/ Eckhart Park (6:20) - bass clarinet starts> uptempo jam punctuated by drum fills> morphs into mellower midtempo jam> bass clarinet solo swings wild> midtempo jam> pause> bass solo> midtempo jam> quick stop
*3/ Ido Like (5:08) – sax starts> midtempo jam with stretched out notes> wild bass clarinet solo> midtempo jam> quick stop
**4/ Sternum (5:24) – sax starts> swinging uptempo jam> bass clarinet solo> u5ptempo jam> quick fade
