EDDIE PALMIERI: Full Circle
Uprising Music, 2018
LATIN JAZZ / SALSA – Damn! At age 81, the legendary pianist revisits several of his classic salsa compositions, some going back to the 1960s, with an all-star jazz-oriented ensemble. There are no rough edges here, but the arrangements are dynamite and the solos run into unexpected territory without ever losing the deep sense of groove.
All solid! Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 6, 8
1. 6:19 – churning midtempo groove: vocal chant, piano rolls with it, bright end
2. 8:04 – fiery w/dark chords: piano solo builds up w/growls, triumphant end
3. 9:58 – strong salsa jam: round of solos from all, chugs then burns hot
4. 7:49 – relaxed tempo: layered sound with the horns way up front
5. 5:05 – uptempo percussion, horns play off sassy vocal, second half jams
6. 9:53 – cool, oblique: several surprising twists & stripped-down solos
7. 5:43 – rhythm pushes against vocals, cool solo from tres, heats up at end
8. 7:31 – huge version of #1: LOTS of horns, solos go deeper, tempos shift
