MEDITATIVE ACOUSTIC GUITAR

Bay area based Richard Osborn plays spiritual, meditative, raga-style pieces on acoustic guitar. In the 1960s Osborn studied with guitarist Robbie Basho, who in turn had studied under sarod master Ali Akbar Khan. The album presents a nice variety of style & length.

RIYL: finger-style acoustic guitar (John Fahey, Leo Kottke); world influences (Paul Winter, Shakti); New Age (William Ackerman); Indian classical music.

No FCC issues.

1 Slow. Apparently improvised; some lovely passages. Disconcerting fret squeak. (3:51)
2 * Mid-tempo. Variations on a much-loved American cowboy song. (4:34)
3 Mid-slow. Intricate rendering of an old English folk song on 12-string guitar. (6:22)
4 Mid-slow. Osborn sings (not well) a sad prayer to finger-style accompaniment. (4:33)
5 ** Mid-tempo. Melody on guitar is accented by tabla. Pleasing & interesting. (2:35)
6 Very slow with gradual accelerando. Much like a classical raga. Guitar, drone, tabla. Beautiful & tranquil. (11:06)
7 ** Slow intro, then mid-fast. Based on a raga by Ali Akbar Khan. Guitar, drone, tabla. Cheerier and bouncier than #6. Really quite nice. Fade out. (8:01)
