Bosnian singer with beautiful, voluptuous voice sings “Sevdah,” the blues of the Balkans; songs are in her native language but titles are indicated in English; backed by a quintet with modern, inventive arrangements that borrow from a number of musical and cultural sources No FCC's; Favorite tracks: 1, 7, 8 *1- Sing Whichever Song is in Your Heart – 4:18 – starts with drum, the “beating heart” of Sevdah music, acoustic guitar; 2- Your Eyes, Beautiful Lena –4:18-- starts with pretty guitar motif; singer comes in over; nice duo 3-A Rose in the Breeze -4:27 –sounds a little flamenco-ish at first with guitar. piano comes in and it sounds more Weimarish; 4- A Bright Moonlight – 3:38 – more uptempo; lots of piano jazz underneath 5-Bentbasa – 5:59-- starts slow and melancholy-sounding with guitar; picks up a little 6- A Lament –4:31 – piano chords lead off – singer comes in; they take turns *7- My beloved –4:14 –guitar intro and underlying rhythm give a Spanish air to this dramatic song *8—Damar -”A Beating Heart” - 5:00 – a little like an art song with its modulating piano chords and almost half-chanted words 9- Why Do We Have to Hide Our Love – 7:06 – guitar intro gives Spanish feel which singer echoes |
